Bio

A large part of my job as Curriculum Coordinator at Roosevelt High School includes providing professional development to the faculty in small groups and as an entire faculty. At least once a month I deliver workshops that have ranged from all-day sessions on curriculum mapping, 30- minute sessions on an effective strategy, and leading the school through continuous school improvement by examining programs and processes at our school. I have also stepped out of my school as a trainer for the state-mandated SpringBoard curriculum for English teachers. The workshop is meant to provide new English teachers information on how the curriculum is organized and best practices for effective implementation of that curriculum. Testimonials: “Lori Hamel collaborates well with teachers. She is adept at working with teachers to refine their curriculum and teaching practices to support student learning. She has a passion for supporting teachers!” Sean Wong, Principal “Lori's training session on the SpringBoard curriculum broadened my understanding of the importance of planning ahead, executing the lesson, and then reflecting on the process and outcomes. She guided us through an activity on engaging students in complex texts, and through her facilitation, I was able to gain a greater understanding of how to scaffold reading for students.” Melissa Kiim, ELA Teacher & AVID Coordinator “Lori Hamel’s prowess at planning and conducting professional development workshops is motivated by her life-long passion for education. She has proven herself indispensable to our school’s leadership team, has the respect of the entire staff, and uses her extensive experience to implement research-based methods of instruction in an engaging manner.” Daniel McLaughlin, SPED Teacher “Lori Hamel consistently provides our faculty with effective professional development because she takes the time to know her audience and material to set achievable learning goals and assessments. Her delivery of information is blended with the right amount of humor to set a tone of willingness to learn.” Shelli Tottori, Librarian “Lori is the epitome of Ms. Aloha. Most people would be not enjoy promoting new ideas to the faculty at the end of the day, but her methods of presentation are outstanding. On our long days that end at 4:00pm, she shares teaching techniques that would normally be seen as burdensome or anxiety triggering as an entertaining and gratifying event... She models the use of technology games such as Kahoots and Quizizz, as well as other strategies to make learning fun!” Lori Shimomura-Sakamoto, CTE Coordinator “Lori Hamel has been a key component in the academic growth of Roosevelt High School. An exceptional combination of sound pedagogy, engaging personality, and with the ability to see the big picture Lori is able to support teachers in honing their craft. A large part of our gains as a school can be attributed to the work Lori has put in. We have been fortunate to have Lori as a member of our team.” Bryan Gusman, Vice Principal
